CASLPro Serial Bluetooth Library FAQ

Q: What Palm devices will it work with? What can I connect to?
A:
It should work with ANY Palm device that has Bluetooth capability. We have also seen no problems accessing Palms with SDIO Bluetooth cards added in. It has been tested on the Zire72, Tungsten T, Tungsten T3, M130 (with SDIO Bluetooth card), and M515 (with SDIO Bluetooth card). We've connected using cell phones, PocketPCs with both built-in and added-on Bluetooth, scientific equipment with proprietary Bluetooth chips, a variety of GPS and other NMEA compliant devices, and a vast array of both serial and USB Bluetooth dongles. If you want to test out a device, feel free to download the
compiled demo application.

Q: What do I need?
A:
In order to use the CASLPro Serial Bluetooth Library, you will need CASL Pro.  Applications using this library must be created using the "C build" option.  You should also have a Bluetooth-enabled Palm and one other Bluetooth-enabled device such as another Palm or PocketPC, Bluetooth dongle, etc.

Q: What's this "Bluetooth Dongle" you keep talking about?
A:
These are little devices that typically have a small antenna on one end and a connector (either serial or USB) on the other. By using one of these in place of a serial cable, you can use your Bluetooth-enabled Palm to wirelessly connect to a device and communicate with it just like you were using a cable. See
http://www.lemosint.com/scripts/bluetooth.asp for some examples.

Q: What about PocketPCs?
A:
To use the Bluetooth Serial Port Profile with PocketPCs, no special libraries are needed.  You just need to determine what COM port is assigned to the BTSPP and open that like a regular COM port. It is typically found on either COM4, COM7, or COM8.  You can use the CASLNet demo application on the PocketPC to tap into Bluetooth serial devices.
